Using Recovery Codes for 2FA

Written by Bouncy Admin
Updated this week

Recovery codes are backup codes that allow you to sign in to your Bouncy.ai account if you lose access to your authenticator app. They are generated when you first enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

What Are Recovery Codes?

  • You receive 8 recovery codes when you enable 2FA.

  • Each code is in XXXX-XXXX format (e.g., AB3K-7PQR).

  • Each code can only be used once. After use, it is permanently consumed.

  • Recovery codes use the characters A-Z (excluding I and O) and 2-9 (excluding 0 and 1) to avoid visual confusion.

When to Use a Recovery Code

Use a recovery code when:

  • You have lost or broken the device with your authenticator app.

  • You have uninstalled your authenticator app.

  • You have reset your phone and did not transfer your authenticator entries.

  • Your authenticator app is temporarily unavailable for any other reason.

How to Sign In with a Recovery Code

  1. Go to the Bouncy.ai sign-in page and enter your email and password as usual.

  2. When the Two-Factor Authentication screen appears, click "Use a recovery code" below the 6-digit code field.

  3. The input field will change to accept a recovery code in XXXX-XXXX format.

  4. Enter one of your unused recovery codes (case-insensitive).

  5. Click Verify Recovery Code.

  6. If valid, you will be signed in and the recovery code will be marked as used.

After signing in with a recovery code, your 2FA will be disabled automatically. You should re-enable 2FA immediately and generate new recovery codes.

How to Save Your Recovery Codes

When recovery codes are first displayed during 2FA setup:

  • Copy: Click the Copy button to copy all 8 codes to your clipboard, then paste them into a secure document.

  • Download: Click the Download button to save a text file named bouncy-recovery-codes.txt to your computer.

The downloaded file includes a header reminding you that each code is single-use.

Tips for Storing Recovery Codes

  • Save them in a password manager (e.g., 1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass).

  • Print them and store the printout in a secure physical location (e.g., a locked drawer or safe).

  • Do not store them in the same place as your authenticator app (e.g., do not save them only on the phone that has the authenticator).

  • Do not share your recovery codes with anyone.

What If I Have Used All My Recovery Codes?

If you have used all 8 recovery codes and still have access to your authenticator app, you can:

  1. Disable 2FA (see How to Disable 2FA).

  2. Re-enable 2FA (see How to Set Up 2FA).

  3. New recovery codes will be generated during the setup process.

If you have no remaining recovery codes and no access to your authenticator app, contact Bouncy support for assistance with account recovery.
